Since the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) by the federal government in 2015, its agencies and institutions are duty-bound to remit all payments into the unified account, but there have been many attempts at dodging the TSA by some institutions.
One of such incidents has been discovered at the Federal College of Education (FCE) in Zaria and has led to much controversy including allegations of death threats amidst ongoing investigations.
The police and management of the college are looking into how the registration fees paid by 1, 128 students through the college’s banks could not be traced to the TSA. The affected students had been unable to complete their registration as the portal found no records of payment.
The Punch reports that the college Registrar, Dr Jibril Lawal denied the alleged connivance of the school’s management in the alleged scandal.
He said, “The management had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the College Bursar, Mohammed Sani-Uwais, to thoroughly investigate the matter and report to the management.”
On his part, the committee chairman said the payments made by the 1, 128 students were not credited to the institution’s Treasury Singular Account and that 82 other students also had irregular records of payment.
Sani-Uwais said 99 per cent of the victims paid their money through the first generation bank located in the Sabongari area of Zaria city.
“This is a serious issue. As such, we reported the case to the police and they (police) advised us to come back and set up an investigation committee to investigate the matter; which we did.
“We have gone a long way in discharging our responsibilities,” Sani-Uwais said.
The bursar stated that as a result of the investigation he was spearheading, different attempts had already been made on his life.
The Kaduna state police command stated that it had arrested a suspect involved in dodging the TSA. The suspect whose identity was not revealed is believed to be an official of a commercial bank who recently resigned as investigations into the matter commenced.
