The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos has accused the All Progressives Congress-led state government of allegedly spending N3.2bn to do a facelift of the state in anticipation of the botched visit of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The PDP slammed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for embarking on a hasty beautification of Lagos, particularly by placing flags and pictures around the areas marked for the passage of the President.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the PDP in the state, Gani Taofik, the party described the preparations for the aborted visit of the President as a fraud.
The party stated, “The purported preparations for the aborted visit of President Buhari to Lagos State was a fraud and another confirmation that the APC is too haphazard in governance, hence the disconnection between the state governor and the Presidency. This made the state not to know that the President had changed his mind on visiting the state.
“Governor Ambode must be accountable for the over N3.2bn claimed to have been expended on the botched visit of the President. In the opinion of the PDP, inviting the President to inaugurate ordinary rehabilitation of roads, which are not even more than seven in a state with 245 wards, is a clear mismanagement of public funds, misplacement of priority and evidence of the APC propagandists’ style. Governor Ambode must, therefore, refund what was purportedly spent.”
Reacting to the allegation in a text message, the spokesperson for the APC in the state, Joe Igbokwe, said Governor Ambode would never spend such an amount on a visit.
Igbokwe described the PDP as a lazy group of people seeking attention.
He said, “The Lagos PDP, if it still exists, has become a pathetic party led by people with a third-rate sense. Tell me the meaning of this insinuation that N3.2bn was spent for just a visit to Lagos by the President. Does it make sense at all? What point is the PDP trying to make with this gaffe?
“The PDP is a group of idle minds. Lagos PDP is confused, helpless and hopeless. Now, the PDP needs to get a life. If you know Governor Ambode very well, his training and public service, it will not be too hard to know that he can never waste that kind of money for just a visit.”
