Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode was awarded the Best Performing Nigerian Governor yesterday at the 2016 International Forum on African Leadership organised by the African Leadership Magazine in New York, USA.
Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, assured that his administration would continue to work round the clock not only to become a shining example for Africans in Diaspora, but retain the state as investors haven. He also stated that since he assumed office on May 29, 2015, efforts have been geared towards creating a conducive and friendly environment for investors and for businesses to thrive.
During the elections last year, many Lagosians were skeptical about Ambode’s ability to surpass the achievements of his predecessor and now Minister for Power, Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola. But surprisingly in just one year, the former financial consultant has proved that he is quite visionary and competent. So it hardly comes as a shock that Gov. Ambode’s accomplishments are being recognised abroad.
Some of Ambode’s notable achievements in Lagos state include:
Improvement of the level of security in the state
Ambode has intensified the campaign against domestic violence through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team and recently trained 190 officials of the State Emergency Command and Control Centre on how to receive reports of Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the State. He also approved the use of the 112 toll free line in reporting cases of rape, defilement and domestic violence.
Road Infrastructure
The governor recently commissioned 114 roads constructed across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of Lagos. He also vowed to tackle the Apapa Headlong Traffic while also signing an MoU for the construction of a 4th mainland bridge which will serve as an alternative route to the Eastern axis and decongest traffic in the State. I personally applaud Ambode for the speed at which the pedestrian bridge at Berger Bus stop along Lagos/Ibadan expressway was constructed. Today, I can cross that road safely to get home.
Health Sector
Last year, Gov. Ambode commissioned 20 Mobile Care Units Ambulances and 26 Transport Ambulances to various General Hospitals and 24 hour primary healthcare centres in the state. He also approved the purchase of generators and x-ray machines to all general hospitals in the state to ensure that 24 hour power supply is not compromised.
Stabilizing the finances of the State
In August, this administration approved the release of N11 billion for the payment of arrears of Pensions owed to pensioners since 2010. In addition, he approved the operation of a single account for all government transactions for the state.
Indeed, Ambode is working and Nigerians continue to laud his performance on social media.
Throwback to last year when Ambode's awesome CV was circulating Social Media. Baba hasn't failed us. @AkinwunmiAmbode
