Eagles Outraged over Akwa Ibom Gov’s N10m Cash Gift for victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars

Super Eagles players were recently left in a fit after a N10 million gift by Akwa State Governor was converted to pay for their camp allowances by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Vanguard reports that the cash-strapped NFF did not pay any winning bonus for the Tanzania match, although the foreign-based stars were promised refunds for their return flight tickets.
In the wake of their 1-0 victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in the final round of qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on Saturday, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Odom reportedly gave the team N10 million.
Only for top NFF officials to get the Governor to say the money will be used to cover their camp allowances and other expenses, much to the chagrin of the players.
“I can tell you that the players did not find this funny. They expected that the Governor’s cash gift will not have anything to do with their camp allowances, which is $200-a-man a day,” a team source disclosed.
“The NFF need to live up to their responsibilities rather than continue to depend on handouts,” the source added.
This doesn’t bode well for the team, and Nigerian football, with the qualification campaign for the 2018 Fifa World Cup set to commence next month.
