Brazil superstar Neymar has taken a swipe at Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi over his new blonde look for the season.
Since the Copa America heartbreak with Argentina this summer, Messi has sported bleached-blonde hair and an impressive beard that was first revealed by his partner, Antonella Roccuzzo.
The new look has become something of a trend across Europe with colleagues Neymar and Rafinha following suit, as well as Sevilla’s Samir Nasri, Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey.
However, Neymar, back to the Barca fold after his exploits with Brazil, has now upped the stakes by suggesting that Messi does not quite carry the style too well.
“The first time that I wanted to grow a beard, I only had little tufts. If I could choose, I wouldn’t have a beard,” Neymar, 24, said at a Barca event.
“Messi looks good enough blonde, with his beard, but I think there’s some room for improvement!” he added, laughing.
Both players, reunited with Luis Suarez for the first time this season were in dazzling form as Barca clobbered Celtic 7-0 in the Champions League Tuesday, and the Brazilian aims to return to the Fifa ballon d’Or podium, Goal writes.
“I hope to be among the final nominees,” he said. “The favourite is difficult to decide. For me, Messi is the best. Cristiano Ronaldo won titles and that sometimes just edges it.
“Sometimes, the Ballon d’Or isn’t won by the best. If it were, Messi would always win it.
“He’s the best I have seen play. It’s easy to play alongside someone like that. He’s a good mate, just like [Luis] Suarez. We always support and help one another.
The dreaded MSN trio – Messi, Suarez and Neymar – scored a staggering 260 over the past two seasons in a nine –trophy haul for Barca.
