Nigerian Army in Heavy Clash with Boko Haram in Borno

Nigerian troops are presently engaged in a fierce gun battle with the Boko Haram terrorist group over control of Mallam Fatori, a town in Borno State, northeast Nigeria. The army confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday.
The Army’s Operation Lafiya Dole, in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) in the northeast had pushed to recapture the town near Lake Chad, when Boko Haram insurgents moved in reinforcements, acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman said in his statement.
It was part of Operation Gama Aiki, the final phase of the battle to rid the country of insurgents whose operational capacity has been greatly degraded over the past months.
The battle, which also featured air raids by the Nigerian Air Force, reportedly led to the rout of several terrorists in the northernmost part of Borno State, SR reports.
The surprise attack occurred around the border with Niger Republic, while the troops were consolidating on the success of the operation.
The ambush led to the killing of many Nigerian soldiers, forcing the troops to withdraw to a vantage position.
“The troops killed several of the Boko Haram terrorists in the resulting encounter and subsequently had to withdraw to a vantage position,” Col Usman said, and affirmed that “the operation is continuing.”
