Boko Haram Releases 21 Chibok Girls to Government


There are reports that 21 of the more than 200 schoolgirls abducted over two years ago by Islamist terrorists group Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno State have been released to the Nigerian government.
The release of the 21 Chibok girls has come in the wake of President Muhammadu Buhari’s three-day working trip to Germany where he’s scheduled to discuss assistance for the rebuilding of the northeastern part of Nigeria ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency.
chibokOnline news website, Saharareporters writes that the freed girls were picked up by military helicopter from Banki area of Borno state where Boko Haram militants dropped them off earlier today. It is hoped that the girls will be re-united with their families as soon as possible.

This release was reportedly brokered by the Swiss Government and the International Red Cross.

In a video released in September, Boko Haram leader, Sheikh Abubakar Shekau revealed the group’s willingness to negotiate with government over a swap deal involving its detained fighters and the Chibok girls.
Meanwhile, the identities of the girls released today are yet to be ascertained.
In an update on Sahara Reporters social media(tweeter) handle, reports a Boko Haram Commander said this first release involved a prisoner swap.

The presidency has since confirmed the release of the girls through the official Twitter account of President Muhammadu Buhari.
