Former national security adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) may be
planning to take ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to court to be a part of
his much publicised trial for the alleged diversion of $2.1 billion
arms fund.
The Nation
reports that indications emerged over the weekend that Dasuki plans to
call Jonathan as a witness in the trial which resumes in November.
Jonathan had recently told an audience at the Oxford University in the United Kingdom that it was impossible for Dasuki to steal the $2.1bn for which he was facing trial.
“We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army,” he had said, trying to explain his point.
Dasuki’s lawyer, Mr Ahmed Raji (SAN), told newsmen over the weekend that he (Dasuki) wanted Jonathan to testify in court.
Raji said: “It
will be desirable for Jonathan to testify for the ex-NSA. It will throw
greater light into grey areas. And it will serve the interest of
Justice.
“It will be fantastic for him to go to court to testify. Dasuki is an agent of a disclosed and known principal.”
Another member of the legal team also said: “With what Jonathan said in London, the only logical thing for him to do is to see it through.”
A
source close to the embattled ex-NSA also stated that he had gotten the
assurance of ex-President Jonathan that he would be in court to testify
to Dasuki’s innocence.
Dasuki’s lawyer is however calling for a political solution to the situation because of the characters involved.
“I believe the President is very sincere. He wants to reorganise Nigeria and he deserves the support of all.
“With a political solution, Mr. President will be in good stead to overcome unnecessary distractions in order to succeed,” Raji said.
It
is believed that the political solution is being suggested so as to
limit the extent of revelations that may be made in the course of open
trial.
