More Nigerians have crashed out in the men’s singles event of the ongoing 16th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship.
Moses Michael, Umaru Balami and Albert Bikom were sent packing on Tuesday, joining their compatriots Christian Paul, Christopher Bulus and Joseph Iyorovbe, who were all stopped in the first round on Monday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
Melissa Ifidzen, Christie Agugbom and Ronke Akingbade also fell out of contention on Monday in the women’s singles event.
Michael failed to live up to expectations losing 6-3, 6-2 to Frenchman Calvin Hemery while Gianni Mina (France) beat Umaru Balami 6-0, 6-0.
Nonso Madueke lost 3-6,0-6 to Polish Karol Drzewiecki and Albert Bisong Bikom was no match for Indian Sasi Kumar Mukund, who cruised to a 6-1,6-0 win.
“I lost to a player who did not allow me to play at all. I tried my best but he played better than me and there was nothing I could do to help the situation,” Michael said.
However, the home stars left in the competition have tough second round games ahead of them.
Christopher Anefu plays tournament number three seed Egyptian Karim-Mohamed, while Henry Atseye battles sixth seed Boy Westerhof.
Clifford Enosoregbe has been paired against Polish Maciej Smola and Sylvester Emmanuel faces number seven seed Alexis Klegou from Benin Republic.
There is however cheery news in the doubles event of the Futures 5 as some of the country’s players fought their ways into the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles event.
Henry Atseye and Enosoregbe Clifford will play against Moez Echargui (Tunisia) and Egyptian Karim-Mohamed Maamoun on Wednesday while Thomas Otu and Ghanaian Kofi Tsatsu Segbedzie will slug it out with Spanish Lopez-Perez Enrique and Boy Westerhof of The Netherlands.
In other second round pairings in the men’s singles, number one seed, Enrique, will play Duncan Mugabe of Uganda, while number five seed Mina Gianni (France) faces Pavel Mirobyan from Russia.
