The winner of the November 8, 2016 presidential election in the
United States of America was always going to make history. Hillary
Clinton was either going to be the first woman to be elected America’s
president or Donald Trump was going to be the first victorious
presidential candidate without any prior experience in government, since
1940. The latter happened.
The Republican nominee surprised many
and surged past Clinton as the vote count climaxed Wednesday morning.
Either candidate needed 270 electoral college votes to win the race to
the White House, and Donald Trump did enough to get it.
While the
results are yet to be finally announced, Hillary Clinton has conceded
defeat and congratulated Donald Trump. The president-elect has also made
a speech, promising to be conciliatory and be a leader for all
Americans.
“We will finally take care of our great veterans. The time I have spent with them has been among my best.
I will harness the talents of our great people,” Trump said.
I will harness the talents of our great people,” Trump said.
The
election campaign was undoubtedly divisive and with many of Trump’s
verbal attacks against Muslims, Hispanics and others, the world
expressed some jitters as signs emerged that he could win.
The
impact was immediately felt on the value of the American currency in its
trading against other major currencies. US stocks also took a major dip
early Wednesday.
Trump has however promised to promote unity in America and with the rest of the world.
“We expect to have great relationships.
“With people of all nations we will see common ground and not hostility,” he said.
Trump
has called on everyone to join hands with him and help him rebuild
America. He has also promised to use the best brains in the country.
“While
the campaign is over, our work for this movement is just starting.
We’ll be doing this work, and hopefully you’ll be proud of your
president,” the billionaire Republican said.
The wait for
America’s first female president will now have to continue for at least
four years but it is very clear, Hillary Clinton put a lot of cracks in
that ceiling.
