There was pandemonium in Kong community, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Sunday night, when unknown gunmen killed two persons before cutting off their heads.
The daredevil assailants, suspected to be cult members, had shot into the air intermittently, ostensibly to scare people away in what was reportedly a raid on the stronghold of a rival cult group.
Eyewitnesses say the entire Ogoni community had been thrown into chaos, with some residents fleeing into a nearby bush during the attack that occurred at about 11.30pm.
Punch reports that the armed cultists took the heads of their victims with them.
Reacting to the development, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Khana LGA, Mr. Baridam Suani, cautioned that his government would no longer tolerate wanton destruction of lives and property in the area.
Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, on Monday confirmed the incident, saying it was a clash between two rival cult groups.
According to Omoni, the hoodlums stormed the community at about 11.30pm and engaged in a supremacy battle with a rival cult group which led to the death of two youths.
“The police is on top of the situation as investigation is ongoing. The corpses have been deposited in the mortuary. Efforts are ongoing to bring the culprits to book,” he added.
In a bid to curb the rising spate of violence, the Rivers State Government has commenced an amnesty programme where repentant cultists are given a new lease of life.
