One hundred and sixty golfers have sealed their places in the 2016 Nigeria Cup grand finale holding at the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos on October 1.
The competition, which is the property of the Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association, marks its 20th edition. The competition is aimed at celebrating the country’s Independence.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos on Wednesday, the Nigeria Cup 2016 Organising Committee Chairman Bayo Alli said the tournament, which was won by Andrew Odiri last year, would tee off on Saturday. The weeklong championship holes out with a gala night at the club on October 2.
Alli said the tournament begins with the juniors on September 24, followed by the caddies two days later.
The ladies event takes place on September 27, with women golfers of various handicap categories competing for the trophy at stake.
Over 200 players with handicap 13 to 28 hit the course on September 28 to vie for honours in the Nigeria Cup kitty while about 180 compete in the Pro-Am event the next day. The guests and veteran categories take place on September 30 ahead of the grand finale on the country’s 56th Independence anniversary on October 1.
Alli, who promised a fun-filled tournament, said various cultural groups would entertain the participants and fans during the period.
He commended companies including Chevron, Shell, Eroton, Total, Dangote Group, Heineken and Yinka Folawiyo for sponsoring the tournament.
