A Nigerian man identified as Oliver has spoken up how difficult life was for him living as a homosexual man in Nigeria. In never video recorded by the Brooklyn Community Pride Centre, Oliver narrated spoke of his experiences.
According to Oliver, he was publicly shamed by a woman at an Abuja mall. “I went to the mall, I went to see a movie. As I was going down the escalator, there was a woman,” Oliver says of the woman who was on same escalator with her son. She pointed at him and said, “I know you, you are one of those converting children to homosexuality. God will punish you!”
Oliver says people stared at him and the security warned him never to visit the mall again. He also told the audience his encounter with his landlord, how he got evicted, the difficulty in maintaining an apartment, and more.
Featured alongside other people in the project ‘LGBTQ New Americans: Oral History Project’, the platform sheds light on what life is like for the homosexuals across the world.
