World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved a new Ebola vaccine, rVSV-ZEBOV, which was developed with
the help of the Canadian government, is capable of providing absolute
protection against the deadly viral disease.
The vaccine, which is under development by Merck, a pharmaceutical company in the United States, was tested in Guinea in 2015.
International Business Times reported
that at the end of the study, it was found that none of the 5,837 who
received the vaccine was infected with the disease, whereas 23 cases
were recorded among those in the control group that did not use the
vaccine.
The
President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Mike Ogirima,
described the discovery as a good development, saying, “It gives hope,
in terms of preventing an epidemic like the one we had in 2014. That is a
good one for humanity.”
