No fewer than six suspected armed robbers were roasted alive in Calabar, Cross River State, Thursday, by an angry mob.
The incident took place in Calabar South Local Government Area of the State; an area that has come under siege by hoodlums in recent times.
According to an eye witness account, the hoodlums, numbering over thirty engaged in a gun duel with the Police, during which they dispersed. Some of them escaped with bullet wounds.
“The hoodlums were over thirty when they encountered the Police. Some of them were caught after an encounter with the Police. The mob caught the stray ones. Three of them were roasted alive along Ephraim Street; one on Abua street and another along White House by Nyong Edem, all in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.”
Confirming the incident, Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo explains:
“Yes! At about 2pm yesterday, we got a distress call that a group of robbers were at White House area of Calabar South. On getting there, our men saw they were in large numbers. They were over twenty. Our men engaged them and were able to arrest five of them. We recovered five locally made Pistols and five Cartridges from them. Unfortunately, two of them were lynched and roasted alive by an angry mob.”
Speaking on arrangements towards improved security in Calabar South, Ugbo reiterated the commitment of the Cross River State command of the Police to wipe out crime in the area, even as she lauded the efforts of the new Police Commissioner.
“We have been trying our best. Thank God for the new Commissioner of Police. Barely two weeks after his assumption of office, he is already recording successes. He has vowed to eradicate crime in Calabar South and the state at large.”
