Coach Imama Amapakabo has agreed a two-year extension of his contract with Premier League champions, Enugu Rangers.
The coach led Rangers to their first league title in 32 years in the just-concluded season of the Nigeria Professional Football League. His previous contract with the Flying Antelopes ended on the final day of the season.
But the 1985 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner, who has been courted by some other clubs, agreed a new deal with Rangers on Friday to put an end to speculations linking him to the other clubs.
Clubs like four-time Nigeria champions, Kano Pillars, and newly-promoted side, Gombe United, have been said to have contacted the former Nigeria junior international, with terms which could lure him away from the Enugu side.
Spokesman of the club, Forster Chime, who confirmed the agreement to our correspondent, said the former junior goalkeeper will sign the dotted lines after the club’s trophy parade.
“Imama has agreed a new two-year extension of his contract with us. He agreed today (Friday) and will sign the contract after our victory parade in Enugu on Saturday and Sunday,” he said.
“The agreement is good news to the club and the players because the coach had offers from other clubs in the league too. The announcement will be made to the players after the parade.”
Our correspondent learnt that the contract talks were held with the Enugu State sports commissioner, Charles Ndukwe, Rangers’ acting chairman, Steve Oruruo, and the club’s General Manager, Paul Chibuzor among others in attendance.
It was also learnt that the contract offered has been much improved when compared to his first year in charge of the team. Rangers was said to have been able to convince the coach because the club will be playing in the CAF Champions League next year.
The victory parade of the team is scheduled to begin by 7am on Saturday (today) and it will end at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
